Want to learn how to make these cheesy potatoes from scratch? My recipe is coated in a creamy cheese sauce and a classic side dish for any Thanksgiving table. My Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes recipe will be a hit at any Thanksgiving table! Keep reading to make this recipe for yourself.

I'm adding emphasis on the word "cheesy" because the recipe is just that. If you love your scalloped potatoes coated in a creamy cheese sauce this is exactly what you need to be making. Potatoes take a while to bake but with this recipe the cheese helps coat the potatoes and when they bake in the oven it has a tasty cheesy crisp that surrounds each and every potato. The recipe is so flavorful and delicious. It's the perfect addition to any holiday dinner.

The first step in this recipe is to get your baking potatoes, I used about 5, and peel them and soak them in a bowl full of lukewarm water. After the potatoes are clean slice them ⅛-inch thick. Add the potato slices in the bowl you used to soak the potatoes in and coat them in the seasoning listed in my recipe below for 1-2 minutes. Place the sliced potatoes in a greased baking dish horizontally. Now we move onto the cheese sauce!

    Seasoning for the potatoes

    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • ¼ teaspoon pepper
    • ¼ teaspoon chili powder
    • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
    • ¼ teaspoon rosemary leaves
    • ½ teaspoon fresh thyme

For the cheese sauce you need the following ingredients

    • 3 tbs butter
    • 2 tbs flour
    • 1 cup whole milk
    • 1 cup of cheddar jack cheese (on top)
    Baking the cheesy scalloped potatoes

This cheese sauce will be accompanied by additional cheddar jack cheese on top of the sauce. You need to place all of these ingredients in a sauce pan and it will turn into a creamy sauce you till then pour on top of the sliced potatoes. Once you pour the cheese sauce on top, add an additional 1 cup of cheddar jack cheese on top. Cover the scalloped potatoes in aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes at 400 degrees. After the 25 minutes are up, take the foil off and cook for an additional 50 minutes. Cooking time can change based on how hot your oven it. Keep an eye on the dish as it's cooking.

Once it's ready, enjoy the dish nice and hot with your dinner. If this is your first time making cheesy scalloped potatoes, make sure you take your time with every step. I promise you'll love this recipe. If you need some more Thanksgiving recipe inspiration, try my brown butter & herb dinner rolls. Leave me a comment and review if you try it!
