Let's make the best homemade hot chocolate!
Are you craving something chocolatey? How do you make hot chocolate? The best hot chocolate recipe? I have the best homemade hot chocolate recipe to make on a cold night. It’s a classic winter recipe and I’m here to help you save money by making your own. That Starbucks hot coco and Dunkin hot coco have nothing on this recipe. It’s so smooth and chocolatey. I also want you to put away your hot coco kit! You don’t need it anymore. This dairy-free homemade hot coco recipe takes five minutes to make on your stovetop and you only need three ingredients. I’m serious, only three.
What you need!
- Chocolate Bar
- Almond Milk or any milk alternative
- Vanilla Extract
- Cocoa Powder
- Whipping cream (I used a plant-based one)
- Brown sugar
- Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger optional
- Optional (sea salt)
I use store brand ingredients always to save a bit of cash but it also tastes the same as popular brands. But if you prefer to use name brand ingredients, feel free. I love to make my hot coco extra creamy with 2-3 ½ cup scoops of chocolate chips. I plan on use dark chocolate soon but I stick to milk chocolate for a classic recipe. I also love a white chocolate hot coco too, it’s just as good. I made a homemade hot chocolate bar last year during a Christmas Eve brunch and it was a hit with my family. I also had a boozy option as well.
Make homemade hot chocolate in a crockpot!
This quick recipe can also be popped into a crockpot on low so it simmers for a bit and the flavor enhances. If you're in a rush to make this for a party, put the crockpot on medium heat or use a saucepan and also place that on medium heat. For the best results, I would recommend the crockpot. For some reason this method made the hot chocolate come out so rich.
It’s so good and you can just close that crockpot lid up and revisit anytime you want a refill.

Notes
Tips:
- Make sure you keep an eye on the chocolate in the sauce pan. Chocolate can burn so consistent stirring is key here.
- I like my hot coco really hot so I like my milk to boil before I pop the chocolate in. It doesn’t task long for the chocolate to melt after you pop the chocolate chips in.
- Milk is KEY. Milk makes homemade hot coco so delicious. PLEASE use it.
